Jutland Barossa Grenache Shiraz Mourvèdre (GSM) 2022

This is splendidly expressed on the nose, showing dark berry, rich floral, mixed spice and toasted almond aromas. The palate delivers succulent fruit flavours with excellent weight backed by supple texture and polished tannins. Beautifully rounded yet wonderfully structured with a persistent flavoursome finish. No Barossa range would be complete without a GSM. On the nose you get a fragrant mix of raspberries and dark plum with a slight hint of pepper and sage bush. Then the palate has its turn, delivering a soft and supple medium bodied flavour combo of such appeal. So silky smooth and supple throughout. Score: 93/100. Cellar: 7 years

Jutland GSM Barossa Valley 2022 – An excellent example of the Barossa version of that classic Rhone blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre (although I would imagine the powers that be are reviewing Simon Adams’ Barossa visa for calling it ‘Mourvedre’ and not ‘Mataro’). Named after the Hundred of Jutland, a district within the Barossa, which in turn was named after the Battle of Jutland, which took place in 1916 off Denmark (both sides, Great Britain and Germany, claimed victory. The British Navy was under the command of Admiral Jellicoe, later appointed First Sea Lord, so perhaps we have our connection to the Riesling). The wine saw French oak for 18 months.
Deep, dark purple. This is an exuberant style, with plenty of earthy notes, dry herbs, cherries, black fruits, leather and cloves. Soft palate, but the richness continues throughout. Fine tannins, though they are quite abundant. Decent length here. The palate reveals more of a dark chocolatey nature. It is perhaps a little more burly than some of the GSMs we see, but none the worse for that. Four to six years. 92.
