An Eden Valley B&B offers more than the usual experience, writes David Nankervis
By the time I finished my painting workshop at charming Jellicoe House I was flicking my wrist with the flourish of a painting profession - all that was missing was beret. My art teacher was Jacqueline Coats from Kapunda, who was great help with her hints, encouragement, and sense of humour. The introduction of optional art classes for guests at Jellicoe House was the brainchild of winemaker Simon Adams, of Sorby Adams Wines, and his wife Helen.....the magic of this experience is you have an image of your holiday-captured on canvas-which you can hang on your wall at home.

Two Valleys full of flavour: Winsor Dobbin finds there is plenty to whet the appetite in the heart of wine country:
Angaston and surrounds are home to several excellent bed and breakfast properties and self-catering cottages - the most popular style of accommodation in the Barossa.
Jellicoe House offers probably the most up-market option. This vineyard retreat is the creation of Sorby Adams winemaker Simon Adams and his wife Helen and can cater for up to eight guests. Fine wine and food are the focus in a renovated bluestone homestead that dates back to the 1870's. Wine tastings and Helen's pre-prepared gourmet meals are among the highlights. For those who like to self cater, there is a larder loaded with staples.

Finding Eden
"It's not often that you get to sit on the verandah of a beautiful bluestone house, drinking wine made from grapes grown only a few metres away. And, it's even better when the wine turns out to be the riesling Simon Adams makes from the vineyard surrounding Jellicoe House in South Australia's Eden Valley." Victoria Carey wrote when she stayed in January.

Driver Reviver - Heaven Sent "The boutique vineyard digs of Sorby Adams, it's all understated, contemporary comfort - think polished floor boards, leather sofas and a bright modern feel, even though parts of the property date back to the 1870's. It contains a proper kitchen and fully stocked larder crammed with Sorby Adams wines, meals and gourmet foods," writes Emma Ventura.

Recline in the vines
"...Jellicoe House delivers the Barossa dream of living in a vineyard and happily becoming part of the obesity epidemic. Helen's Angaston Appetizers has been producing gourmet delights since 20o2, so expect the pantry and freezer to be stocked with goodies such as chicken laksa, Barossa beef cooked in Guinness and Moroccan lamb. There'll also be a complimentary bottle of Jellicoe wine, and you're invited to enjoy a personal tasting of the Sorby Adams range with the winemaker....Guests are free to indulge in rural fantasies such as strolling through 10ha of vines, plucking fruit from the orchard, pretending at petanque and catching yabbies in the dam, " enthuses Rob Ingram.

"If you are looking for somewhere blissfully off the beaten track, then this beautifully restored four-bed bluestone homestead in the middle of the vineyard is for you. Owner Helen Adams has thought of everything, from a fully equipped kitchen and pantry, to a copy of Maggie's Harvest left enticingly open by the stove. With her Angaston Appetizers range of platters, and the collection of her partner Simon's Sorby Adams wines (to buy at Cellar Door prices), you don't even need to leave!" writes Matt Preston.
